New Street Platform Drainage Surveys

Carnell have successfully completed a drainage asset inventory and condition survey at Birmingham New Street Station, as part of the prestigious Birmingham Gateway project.

This was Carnell's first surveying job on the railway network, and the site operation finished ahead of programme, taking just 9 nights rather than the 15 scheduled.  This created a significant cost saving for client Mouchel and reduced disruption to the day-to-day operation of the station.

The project involved an examination of the station's drainage system, including all 12 platforms, the connecting tunnels and hinterland area.  The inspection was undertaken by one of Carnell's experienced surveying teams, using specialist mobile equipment which allowed manoeuvrability around the platforms.  High pressure water jetting was used to remove silt and debris from the underground drainage network, which was then surveyed using CCTV push rod and crawler cameras, with footage viewed from battery powered monitors.

Less than 10 days after completing the investigation, Carnell were able to deliver detailed CAD drawings and Wincan reports to the client, so that they could determine existing capacity and rectify defects.

This success has built on the excellent relationship between Carnell and Mouchel, who have previously collaborated on a number of similar schemes on the UK highways network.
