Carnell achieves Zero AFR and over half a milllion man hours without an accident

By July 2010, Stafford based Carnell Support Services had successfully operated for a full year without a single reportable accident, equating to over 600,000, man-hours.  This excellent record follows the recent award of a RoSPA Gold and successful completion of British Standard OHSAS 18001, both recognised health and safety accolades.

The Highways Agency has recently published its own strategy to ‘Aiming for Zero' and has set a target of 0.25 AFR (Accident Frequency Rate).  However, Carnell's Chief Executive, Darren Nelson was quick to comment on his team's commitment to maintaining its standards. "Whilst seeing this as a significant achievement from the year start AFR of 0.185, we recognise there is no room for complacency in health and safety.  At Carnell we know we are only as good as our last accident which means we have to continue to be vigilant, report any ‘near misses' and approach all aspects of health and safety with a procedural and common sense approach" he finished.

Responding to the findings of its last reportable incident, where an operative twisted an ankle due to limited light during night work, Carnell invested in a variety of task lighting solutions. These included a ‘higher-visibility' jacket (see image above) with built in LED lights which increases vision and conspicuity.
