Exciting Times Ahead for Carnell

As we approach and prepare for the beginning of RIS2, the business is pleased to announce a significant investment in people and a strengthening of the current board of directors.

The second five year Roads Investment Strategy period (known as RIS2) runs from 2020 to 2025 and sees a significant increase in Highways England investment in the strategic road network. RIS2 will see Highways England invest £25.3 billion in the network – this represents a 50% increase in funding compared with the current RIS1 period which has run from 2015-2020, so we have busy times ahead.

Darren Nelson will switch from CEO to a non-executive role; this enables Darren to continue to focus on strategic input on quality, safety and innovation, and provide challenge and advice to the board. This is a growing area of importance as Highways England continue to evolve their contracting model and widen their thinking on what can be achieved on the back of a big increase in spending levels.

Aidan Clarke will switch to the CEO role, leading the business in strategic decision making, client management, corporate governance, leading the executive board, and managing shareholders interests. Aidan of course has been at the heart of delivering quality, value and innovation and growth, in an environment that places the highest value on safety and customer value. Aidan said, “I’m looking forward to delivering for Highways England across the RIS2 period. Highways England and Carnell are fully aligned on their commitment to safety, customer and delivery. My team and I are excited to be preparing for a key period of enhancing the highways network for the country and delivering value for the taxpayer”.

Andy Jamieson will take up the position of Managing Director, reporting into Aidan Clarke. Andy will be responsible for day to day leadership of the business, client management, and will run the management board. Operations and departmental heads/directors will report into Andy. Andy has close links to the Carnell business of course, working for the business on a non-exclusive basis as a consultant; we are delighted to now secure Andy’s services on a full time, exclusive basis. Andy comments, “I am excited to be given this opportunity and am looking forward to taking up the role and building on Carnell’s success to date. The business is making  a significant transition to contracting direct with Highways England and this brings great opportunity to strengthen our business and create an exciting and sustainable future for all our people.

These changes will take effect from 1st October 2019.

Reflecting on the changes Darren comments “We believe these changes strengthen the business and give us the best foundations to excel in the RIS2 period. In addition to retaining strategic input, we will have strength and exclusive day to day focus in key positions for the business. With this strengthened team in place, Carnell are in a great position for the future, and continue to build on what we believe is an excellent business.”
