Carnell provides a highways drainage surveys predominantly to Highways England on motorways and major routes across the country. This service locates and determines the inventory and condition of chambers, outfalls, pipework and ditches under and adjacent to the carriageway.
You will be carrying out the surveys, working on site as part of a survey team including CCTV camera crews and jetters – see pages on Carnell’s Water Management service for more details. This will involve working night shifts and depending on the work location, staying away from home during the week. After some basic training, you will be required to accurately capture measurements and other characteristics of the assets, using GPS handheld equipment and bespoke software so the information can be mapped and presented to our clients.
CSCS Card (preferred but not essential).
Full driving licence (preferred but not essential).
Good organisational and practical skills, with a strong focus on quality and attention to detail.

Health, Safety and Customer Considerations
Ensure all works under their control are carried out safely and that they do not pose a danger to the workers on site, sub-contractors, site visitors or members of the general public. Ensure that the contract specific SHEQ documentation is available and communicated to the relevant people prior to a contract starting.
There will be times that you will have interactions with customers, such as road users and residents. You must be able to deal with customers in an empathetic and polite manner.
PPE (and van where required) are all provided and a full induction will be carried out upon start. When staying away from home during the week accommodation will be provided (usually Premier Inn / Travelodge) close to site.
You will be able to:
Undergo training and coaching to enable effective and efficient projects. Developing a detailed understanding of highways drainage specifications.
Be responsible for working to a day/night shift schedule to include: work assignments/rotations, employee training, employee vacations, employee breaks, overtime assignment, back-up for absent employees, and shift rotations.
Work with the supervisor regarding project start ups, close downs and changeovers of projects.
Get involved and actively participate in weekly meetings.
Work with the Supervisor to meet project deadlines, and relevant management targets.
Be responsible for quality control for the work carried out.
Ensure Right First Time on projects.
Make adjustments as necessary during the shift to produce work within agreed standard specifications, reject work outside of specifications.
Operate within standard operating procedures and safety standards.
Communicate with other work colleagues, Supervisors, Contracts Manager, Operations Manager and the Client.
Accurately and timely report shift differentials.
Assist in activities as necessary and other duties as assigned.
Be involved in performance reviews and assessments.
The above duties are commensurate of the position, it may be expected to vary the role as and when the Business requires it.
