Section / Senior Engineer

Role Overview

You will provide independent engineering and supervisory support to schemes. You will be reliable, responsible, professional and knowledgeable. You will report directly to either the site manager or contracts manager of the scheme, and you will be expected to work with the minimum of supervision and training during the provision of your duties.

You will be expected to easily manage established site systems to control the flow of engineering information and control between Carnell and their Client. As such you will be expected not only to provide engineering control (line and level) to any operations being undertaken but you will be responsible for identifying and generating technical queries to ensure works are constructed with the full agreement of the Designer.

You will be responsible for monitoring the quality of workmanship against ITPs, raising NCR’s when work or processes fail to reach their minimum target and the production of comprehensive as-built information to allow completion of the schemes H&S file.  You will be trained and expected to check elements of temporary works at various stages of their installation or removal.

You will be expected to produce a detailed site diary of operations under your control and interim progress reports stating the engineering position of the scheme your on, including updates to contract programmes using MS Project.

You will work considerately and take into account the requirements of customers: road users and the communities you work in. As a representative of Carnell, any interaction with customers will be empathetic and courteous.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Health & Safety:

  • Must be clear about their duties under the H&SWA in relation to their own safety and that of others.
  • Complete all necessary documentation to allow works to start, i.e. ‘Site Specific Risk Assessment’, etc.
  • Ensure all works under their charge are carried out safely in accordance with our SHE Management system and that they do not pose a danger to the workers on site, sub-contractors, site visitors or members of the general public.

Professionalism / Teamwork:

  • Coach and look after new starters, so that they become competent to work alongside a motorway or high-speed road.
  • Develop effective and efficient work teams and motivate individuals to meet targets.
  • Liaise with clients and develop good business relationships.

Work Winning / Tendering:

  • Survey potential works and submit reports to the commercial department for pricing when instructed to do so by the CM.
  • Ability to produce comprehensive material take offs from site drawings and order materials for specific schemes.


  • Ability to read and interpret site drawings and specifications to a high standard.
  • Ability to establish site survey control to a high standard with minimal supervision.
  • Ability (with minimal supervision) to translate drawings and model information to establish line and level control required for the engineering control of site operations.

Quality Management:

  • Demonstrates an excellent understanding of ITP’s and their limits in controlling quality of works on site.
  • Ensure ITP’s are in place for all constructed permanent works and are completed fully for all works under their control.
  • Ensure all works are carried out to the required specification and standard.

Communication & Leadership:

  • Keep CM and QS informed of any changes to works scope, programme, issues preventing works being carried out in line with tendered outputs so EWN and CE can be raised.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both written and orally to a high standard, including the daily production of a detailed diary relating to site operations.

Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications

  • HNC/ HND – Civil Engineering.
  • Experience in the industries in which we work i.e. highways, etc
  • Minimum 4 years setting out experience.
  • Already operating at Section Engineer / Snr Engineer level
  • CSCS Supervisor Card
  • Ability to read plans and drawings to a high standard
  • Confident using MS Project
