Carnell promote careers in engineering

We recently welcomed student Solomon Zigarh to one of our sites for a day of work experience. He kindly wrote us a letter to thank us for “the lifetime opportunity which was amazing.”

Whilst attending the Year 10 Careers Day event at St. Peter’s School in Huntingdon, Solomon was so impressed with the presentation by Lewis Haycock (Carnell Site Engineer) in relation to his experience as an apprentice and his subsequent transfer to the Carnell graduate programme; that he said that he would like to be an engineer for Carnell like Lewis.

Due to Solomon’s enthusiasm and desire to know more about the role of an engineer we made arrangements (i.e. preparing a plan for the visit and ensuring that the necessary risk assessment and method statement were in place) for him to visit one of our drainage scheme projects on the A14 as part of a work experience visit.

During the visit we provided Solomon with a controlled demonstration of various operations on site and the plant and equipment that is used. Solomon was then provided with an overview of the SHEQ documentation and risk controls that must be observed and how a site engineer would monitor compliance etc. We then provided Solomon with information in relation to the various routes that he could follow to gain an engineering role. Solomon was interested in all aspects of the site visit and who knows, maybe he will be one of Carnell’s future stars!
