M5 Oldbury Expansion Joints

Multi-disciplinary scheme delivered as PC

Route One successfully  completed their biggest ever scheme in August 2025 acting as principal contractor (PC) to National Highways on the M5 Titford Lane to Oldbury Viaduct scheme. The works involved the essential maintenance of the bridge expansion joints on the raised section of the M5 between Junction 2 and Junction 3. As Lot 8 supplier for structures, water proofing & expansion joints in the Midlands region, Route One self delivered the joint works while managing the other Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) lot providers including: traffic management (Chevron); landscape and ecology (Network Plus); road markings (WJ) and technology (Mway Comms), as well as the surfacing works by PDF supplier Eurovia. Route One used four specialist teams and bespoke equipment for the expansion joint replacements. Having this in-house resource with extensive experience and training gave certainty in the crucial aspects of safety, quality and efficiency. 

Works were delivered under night timeclosures and included:
• 75 expansion joints (1200m).
• 42,000 m² of surfacing.
• 12,353m of road markings.
• 799 road studs.
• 1,392m of detritus clearance.
• 23 loop replacements.

The scheme was completed in August 2025 and took 19 weeks (2 weeks quicker than programmed) and was 3% below target cost.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the challenges that could have delayed the scheme was the high traffic volumes late into the evening, meaning the scheduled start for overnight closures could not be met. This resulted in our
initial shifts experiencing shorter working windows, which impacted the overall programmed works. We proactively engaged with National Highways and the TM provider to implement the Enhanced Mobile Carriageway Closure (EMCC), improving access times.

    Across a total of 10,736 working hours.
  • The 400kV high-voltage over head cables could not be isolated during the works, so a comprehensive Permit to Work system was implemented.
Customer
  • Avoiding the need for full closures eliminated c. 5,000 vehicles per night diverting off the SRN, reducing the impact on local communities, and saving road users around 20 minutes added journey time.
  • Impact Protection Vehicle deployed to safeguard road workers while minimising road user impact.

 

Delivery
  • Secure site compound established beneath the OldburyViaduct to optimise logistics. Travel time, fuel consumption and security all improved.
  •  EcoSite (solar/hybrid generator) used as a more environmentally friendly and cost effective solution for off-grid power. Providing 71.16t CO2e and 54% cost savings.
