BRIDGES & STRUCTURES PROJECT

A50 Expansion Bridge Joints

in collaboration with Balfour Beatty

Major manufacturers line the A50 as one of the key trunk routes between the East and West Midlands. It is also heavily used by hundreds of thousands of visitors to Alton Towers, one of the UK’s top tourist attractions.

This essential maintenance along the  A50 Growth Corridor will ensure the bridges are fit for purpose, cutting journey times and improving road safety.

Large manufacturers such as JCB, Rolls-Royce, Toyota and Alstom rely on this key East-West route to keep supply chains moving and provide links to international markets, currently traffic congestion on the A50/A500 threatens to stand in the way of business growth. The route sees between 60,000 to 90,000 vehicles passing along it every single day.

Main Activities

All works will be programmed within complex traffic management arrangements and live traffic to ensure minimal disruption to road users and local business including the adjacent JCB factory. R1i will work in collaboration with Balfour Beatty through existing established relationships with Staffs Council, Tarmac Contracting and / Connect Roads to develop fully resourced programmes and a robust delivery plan, with a joined up approach to overcome phasing and practical challenges.

The main operation will consist of fully replacing over 900 linear metres of modular and flexible joints.

R1i will be combining their works with other key operations such as surfacing and lining works to ensure traffic management costs and delays to the public are minimised.
