BRIDGES & STRUCTURES PROJECT

Forge Island Bridge Restoration

Repair and renovation of the access bridge over the River Don

The £47 million Forge Island project is a new leisure destination within the heart of Rotherham, occupying a prominent river and canal side site on the edge of the Town Centre.

A full refurbishment package

There is only one vehicle bridge with access to Forge Island, which posed a huge potential logistical issue for all the subcontractors involved in the scheme. Development on Forge Island meant increased traffic and necessitated a full refurbishment of the bridge.

Route One having many areas of expertise, were contracted to provide a range of services.

Route One worked in conjunction with Bowmer & Kirkland and Rotherham Council to provide a full turnkey package to refurbish the existing structure on this development. The works involved:

  • Surfacing and civil engineering
  • Bridge bearings
  • Temporary works – bridge jacking and scaffolding
  • Waterproofing
  • Removal, replacement & repair of concrete
  • Expansion joints
  • Clean up & graffiti removal
  • Road Markings

Building A Track-Record of Successful Delivery

The scheme was successfully completed in August 2024.

Council Leader, Cllr Chris Read lead a special ribbon cutting ceremony at Forge Island on Saturday 14 September. Local families were invited to enjoy a day of free entertainment and activities. Forge Island maximises its waterside location and the development brings cinema, hotel, food and drinks outlets, and a car park, with the new leisure facilities set within an attractive public space.

Route One provided an integrated, flexible service, cooperating with other subcontractors working on the island and maintaining as much bridge access as possible for all involved.
