TECHNOLOGY & LIGHTING PROJECT

East Midlands Network Testing

Electrical and structural surveys of streetlighting

Cyclical Maintenance

Our Technology & Lighting team self-deliver network testing of streetlighting for Maintenance & Response contractor Amey, on the National Highways East Midlands network.

Over the last year we have surveyed approximately 1700 assets (columns and feeder pillars), undertaking the following:

Structural tests

Column inspections using a MEWP to check brackets and lamp integrity.

We use a TVC ColcheK2 to undertake non-destructive testing of the below ground section of the planted steel lighting column. An ultrasonic thickness gauge (dip test) is applied at a depth of 400mm to determine the thickness of the column material and identify signs of rusting / corrosion.

Electrical tests

For column electrical testing we carry out a full periodic test on ALL circuits as per BS7671 18th edition. This includes dead testing (insulation resistance, continuity, polarity) and then the live tests (earth loop impedance, PFC, R1&R2).

At the feeder pillar we take ZE readings , check and record supply characteristics , check and verify schematic drawing information and BS7671 testing on hard wired equipment within the pillar (light, heater and RCD socket).

Right people, right kit

Our service is built around self-delivery. Our Technology & Streetlighting team are fully-qualified and work all over the country.

We have our own specialist plant, such as  Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs) and testing kit.

Our electrical testing equipment includes a Megger Multifunction tester which delivers fast, efficient and reliable testing of electrical installations in line with the latest standards. The device covers all core test functions required for comprehensive electrical installation testing and certification. These critical functions include insulation resistance, earth loop impedance, RCD, Earth, Phase rotation, and continuity testing, and precise voltage measurement.

Benefits

Safety
  • Carnell are a specialist highway lighting contractor registered with HERS and holding National Highways Sector Scheme 8.
  • We provide Amey with an experienced and suitably qualified team comprising of electrical supervisors, electricians and electrical installation operatives.
Customer
  • We carry out our testing activities alongside Amey’s other M&R activities such as arboriculture and drainage works. This means that we share traffic management, reducing network occupancy and the associated impact on road users.
Delivery
  • We flex our resource based on the number of assets in each closure as identified by the Amey team on CONFIRM. We draw on our nationwide resource when demand requires it.
  • The TM sharing also provides cost savings / efficiencies.
