SAFETYCAM PROJECT

Protecting Road Workers

SafetyCam in action

Road workers are continually exposed to hazards associated with traffic and movement of vehicles on site.

SafetyCam protects operations teams working on the roads by using two complimentary vehicle detection systems to capture instances of dangerous driving, whilst providing a conspicuous visual deterrent and actively changing driver behaviour.

Originally developed as a one-camera solution in 2014, a decade of continuous improvement has seen us hone the capture and reporting of dangerous driving in road works and the subsequent liaison with police forces to provide prosecution-ready evidence.

Below is a collection of videos we produced in the early days, showing traffic management incursions where drivers are attempting to gain an advantage. Each incident led to the police taking action.

M23 Incursion

National Highways requested Carnell provide a SafetyCam on the M23 near Gatwick Airport following 47 separate incursions into their slip-road closure during a single weekend.

A week later it was a different story. With SafetyCam in attendance there was a 98% reduction in incursions.

Just one driver was brazen enough to enter the work zone.

In fairness, they did go slowly and at least they put the cones back so that others didn’t follow! That didn’t stop the police from getting in touch…

Drink Driver in Blackpool

SafetyCam was situated on A585 in the North West when a car smashed through cones at the entry to the road works.

Our SafetyCam operative took the vehicle reg from the ANPR system and called the police with the relevant details.

Less than 30 minutes later, the police had caught up with him, and the breathalyser showed he was well over the limit. Drink driving plus evidence that he ignored traffic signs and put the work force in danger meant an easy conviction.

SafetyCam Montage

Several instances of poor driver behaviour captured including:

 – Incursion through road closure.

 – Incursion into cones.

 – Blue light incursion.

 – Speeding site traffic.

Running Red Lights

Amberon TM requested SafetyCam attend a scheme on the A359 Ruabon, Wales where they were working, following complaints from the site team of extremely high numbers of motorists jumping red lights, using mobile phones and being verbally abusive.

With an average of 5 vehicles reported jumping the red traffic light on each traffic light cycle, this amounted to approximately 587 drivers breaking the law during every 12-hour shift.

SafetyCam was deployed with camera signs placed upstream to make sure it was as conspicuous as possible. With SafetyCam present, vehicles jumping the red light reduced by a staggering 95% to just 26 vehicles of the 3375 vehicles recorded passing through the signals.

We’ve receieved several awards for SafetyCam including the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award, national and regional CIHT Awards and a National Highways Industry Award.
