Supporting Research into Musculoskeletal Risk in Highways

Date

We are happy to announce our support for Musculoskeletal Risk Profiling (MRPro)—the first health protection research programme addressing musculoskeletal risk across the entire National Highways supply chain.

Musculoskeletal conditions account for over half of all ill-health in construction, costing employers an estimated £650m each year and impacting thousands of workers through pain, incapacity, loss of earnings, and mental health challenges.

MRPro will build a robust evidence base for future interventions by quantifying musculoskeletal risks in key highway tasks, highlighting best practice, and identifying barriers to improvement. Through focus groups, surveys, and data sharing, the project will unite the sector in creating a strategic approach to reducing risk and improving health through occupational hygiene and ergonomics.

Planned and delivered by Steve Perkins MA CDir FIoD FInstP of AFOH Associates Ltd, MRPro follows the successful M25 Healthier Highways programme. It is jointly funded by contributions from supply chain partners, matched by National Highways. Results will be made publicly available in mid-2026.
